Zsolnay Pottery Hand Painted Ceramic Vessels

A Zsolnay ceramic pitcher bowl and quarter piece serving vessels, Pécs, Hungary. Short neck bowl with lobed body and hand painted polychrome enamel decoration of a floral motif. Marked to the underside with a faint cobalt mark and impressed ‘ZSOLNAY, PECS.’ A pair of quarter circle small serving vessels with floral and bird motif decorated with eosin and colored glazes. One marked to the underside with a five churches mark.
Zsolnay Pottery was founded by Vilmos Zsolnay in Pécs, Hungary in 1853. Characterized by their Art Nouveau style pottery and figurines fired at high temperatures. Their trademark tower hallmark was not used until 1878, earlier pieces are unmarked. Introduced in 1893, many of the pieces appear with an ‘eosin’ glaze giving them a lustrous iridescent finish.
