Hand-Colored Engraving Bookplates of Botanical Specimens
Item Details
A pair of hand-colored engravings of botanical specimens on paper. These bookplates depict specimens of the mallow plant and a species of pea plant with both flowers and seeds. These prints are from a publication of De Materia Medica, an explanation of medicinal plants and substances by Pedanius Dioscorides (40-90 AD). Each print is titled with archaic taxonomic names to the upper center and has a paragraph of description on the pictured plant below the image. They are presented behind glass in silver tone frames with rings for hanging.

- edge wear to frames; toning and foxing to paper; minor water damage; slightly dusty; tears in paper backing.
