19th-Century Zsolnay Reticulated Ceramic Console Bowl

A 19th-century Zsolnay ceramic console bowl, Pécs, Hungary, ca. 1886. Ivory colored ground with hand painted polychrome floral motif to the interior of the bowl. Serrated and reticulated rim with four reticulated bulbous appearing around the outside. Sitting on a reticulated foot. Cobalt mark present to the underside.

Zsolnay Pottery was founded by Vilmos Zsolnay in Pécs, Hungary in 1853. Characterized by their Art Nouveau style pottery and figurines fired at high temperatures. Their trademark tower hallmark was not used until 1878, earlier pieces are unmarked. Introduced in 1893, many of the pieces appear with an ‘eosin’ glaze giving them a lustrous iridescent finish.

Condition

- crazing present throughout, especially to the underside.
