19th-Century Zsolnay Reticulated Ceramic Centerpiece

A 19th-century Zsolnay reticulated ceramic centerpiece, Pécs, Hungary, ca. 1886. Hand painted with polychrome enamel and gilt decoration. Serrated and reticulated top rim and raised relief medallions to either side of the horizontal with floral reticulation. To the front side is an embossed and reticulated flower or leaf design sitting on a footed. Present to the underside is a cobalt stamp and impressed ‘1832.’
Zsolnay Pottery was founded by Vilmos Zsolnay in Pécs, Hungary in 1853. Characterized by their Art Nouveau style pottery and figurines fired at high temperatures. Their trademark tower hallmark was not used until 1878, earlier pieces are unmarked. Introduced in 1893, many of the pieces appear with an ‘eosin’ glaze giving them a lustrous iridescent finish.
