Polia Pillin Signed and Illustrated Art Pottery Vases

Item Details

A pair of signed and illustrated art pottery vases by noted mid-century ceramicist Polia Pillin. The pair includes a short and stout light blue vase with hand-painted illustrations of a woman and two birds, and a taller vase with a long neck and hand-painted illustrations of two women. Each is rendered in Pillin’s iconic style using colored clay slip mixed with glazes to create a thicker, unusual finish against a contrasting background. They are signed in black underglaze with her iconic stylized signature, “Pillin”.

Pillin (Polish, 1909 – 1992) and her husband William lived in New Mexico and Chicago for many years until relocating to Los Angeles in 1946. They created a new type of glazing which involved mixing engobes and glazes together to develop more lustrous and deep glazes. Their work was largely produced in a home studio. Pillin is listed in Who’s Who of American Art and she won many awards and accolades during her long career. Her work is on display in a number of prestigious public and private collections.
