19th-Century Fischer J. Reticulated Ceramic Double Handled Vase

A 19th-century Fischer J. ceramic double handled vase, Budapest, Hungary. Hand painted polychrome enamel and gilt decoration with two large, wing form handles. Highly reticulated body appears with four medallions with hand painted floral scenes. Marked to the underside with a cobalt mark and illegible impressed numeral indication.

Fischer J. Budapest was founded by Ignace Fischer in Pest, Hungary, in 1864. (Pest is the eastern half of modern Budapest which was united with the western half, Buda, in 1873). His pieces bear the mark ‘Fischer J.’ with the ‘J’ being the same letter as ‘I’ in Hungarian. The Fischer factory was bought by Zsolnay Pottery in 1895.

- crazing present throughout; minor gilt and paint decoration loss.
