19th-Century Fischer J. Reticulated Ceramic Urn

A 19th-century Fischer J. ceramic urn, Budapest, Hungary. Hand painted polychrome enamel and gilt decoration with a red floral motif and gilt handles. Reticulated body with a tulip form lip. Marked to the underside with a black stamp.

Fischer J. Budapest was founded by Ignace Fischer in Pest, Hungary, in 1864. (Pest is the eastern half of modern Budapest which was united with the western half, Buda, in 1873). His pieces bear the mark ‘Fischer J.’ with the ‘J’ being the same letter as ‘I’ in Hungarian. The Fischer factory was bought by Zsolnay Pottery in 1895.

Condition

- some gilt loss in the handles and throughout the urn; chips present around the foot.
