19th-Century Fischer J. Reticulated and Embossed Ceramic Jug

A 19th-century Fischer J. ceramic jug, Budapest, Hungary. Hand painted polychrome enamel decoration with ornate reticulation and embossed designs present throughout. To the base is a reticulated medallion and two hairy paw style feet. In the bulbous form of the body are raised reticulated medallions, floral patterned bosses, and a scrolled handle. Marked to the underside with a faint cobalt stamp.

Fischer J. Budapest was founded by Ignace Fischer in Pest, Hungary, in 1864. (Pest is the eastern half of modern Budapest which was united with the western half, Buda, in 1873). His pieces bear the mark ‘Fischer J.’ with the ‘J’ being the same letter as ‘I’ in Hungarian. The Fischer factory was bought by Zsolnay Pottery in 1895.
