19th-Century Zsolnay Reticulated Ceramic Vase

A 19th-century Zsolnay reticulated ceramic vase, Pécs, Hungary. Ivory colored glaze with hand painted polychrome enamel and gilt decoration. Highly reticulated floral motif throughout the vase with splashes of vibrant Persian blue color in the embossed reticulation. The interior of the vase is closed off and recessed from the reticulated lobe. Marked to the underside with an impressed mark.

Zsolnay Pottery was founded by Vilmos Zsolnay in Pécs, Hungary in 1853. Characterized by their Art Nouveau style pottery and figurines fired at high temperatures. Their trademark tower hallmark was not used until 1878, earlier pieces are unmarked. Introduced in 1893, many of the pieces appear with an ‘eosin’ glaze giving them a lustrous iridescent finish.

Condition

- hairline crack around the underside of the base; some minor craquelure present.
