19th-Century Zsolnay Reticulated Ceramic Console Bowl

A late 19th-century Zsolnay reticulated ceramic console bowl, Pécs, Hungary. Hand painted polychrome enamel and gilt decoration. Flared rim with shell forms to all four sides, reticulated body with painted floral panels to either sides and embossed floral designs in high relief to each end. Impressed mark to the underside of the footed base.

Zsolnay Pottery was founded by Vilmos Zsolnay in Pécs, Hungary in 1853. Characterized by their Art Nouveau style pottery and figurines fired at high temperatures. Their trademark tower hallmark was not used until 1878, earlier pieces are unmarked. Introduced in 1893, many of the pieces appear with an ‘eosin’ glaze giving them a lustrous iridescent finish.
