19th-Century Zsolnay Reticulated Ceramic Lidded Jar

A 19th-century Zsolnay ceramic lidded jar, Pécs, Hungary, ca. 1875-76. Hand painted with polychrome and gilt decoration. Highly reticulated lid and body with blue floral motif and acanthus scrolls around the neck. Impressed mark to the underside, ‘ZSOLNAY, PECS, 1980.’
Zsolnay Pottery was founded by Vilmos Zsolnay in Pécs, Hungary in 1853. Characterized by their Art Nouveau style pottery and figurines fired at high temperatures. Their trademark tower hallmark was not used until 1878, earlier pieces are unmarked. Introduced in 1893, many of the pieces appear with an ‘eosin’ glaze giving them a lustrous iridescent finish.
