19th-Century Zsolnay Reticulated Ceramic Centerpiece Bowl

A 19th-century Zsolnay reticulated ceramic centerpiece bowl, Pécs, Hungary, ca. 1886. Ivory colored ground with hand painted polychrome and gilt decoration with a pink floral motif. Reticulated, scrolled ends with flared lip and a ornate acanthus reticulation in the body of the bowl. To the interior of the bowl is a floral motif throughout. Sitting on a reticulated footed base with shell form designs. Marked to the underside with cobalt and impressed marks.
Zsolnay Pottery was founded by Vilmos Zsolnay in Pécs, Hungary in 1853. Characterized by their Art Nouveau style pottery and figurines fired at high temperatures. Their trademark tower hallmark was not used until 1878, earlier pieces are unmarked. Introduced in 1893, many of the pieces appear with an ‘eosin’ glaze giving them a lustrous iridescent finish.
