19th-Century Fischer J. Reticulated and Embossed Ewer

A 19th-century Fischer J. ceramic ewer, Budapest, Hungary. Hand painted polychrome enamel decoration with raised bosses throughout. Dragon form handle with ridged back, slender neck with embossed floral motif, and bulbous form body with highly ornate floral reticulation. Shield panels around the bulbous body depicts bird and tree forms. Interior chamber without reticulation. Marked to the underside with a black stamp and impressed mark.

Fischer J. Budapest was founded by Ignace Fischer in Pest, Hungary, in 1864. (Pest is the eastern half of modern Budapest which was united with the western half, Buda, in 1873). His pieces bear the mark ‘Fischer J.’ with the ‘J’ being the same letter as ‘I’ in Hungarian. The Fischer factory was bought by Zsolnay Pottery in 1895.

- minor crazing throughout; small flea bites to the base.
