An oil painting on canvas still life scene by Edgar Yaeger (American, 1904-1997), executed in 1930. Situated upon a table top is a handled vase with lively flowers decorative grasses. Around the vase are several pieces of fruit including two prominent yellow lemons. The ground is rendered in thick applications of earthen tones with a red-orange drapery backdrop. Signed and dated to the lower right in paint. Presented without glass, housed in a modern gilt and gesso frame with ornate pierced floriform moulding to the four corners and high relief egg and dart moulded sight with a beveled frame liner.
Known for his modern abstract style and his WPA murals of the Depression era, Yaeger was influenced by European modernists such as Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso and Giorgio de Chirico. Yaeger’s work has been exhibited at many institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the Detroit Institute of Art, the Corcoran Gallery, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, among others.
