Zsolnay Ceramic Stein and Jug with Figural Relief Panels

A late 19th-century Zsolnay ceramic stein and jug, Pécs, Hungary, ca. 1887. Hand painted decoration with gilt accents. The top register of the stein features circular medallions with ambiguous relief scenes. The middle banded register depicts a hunt scene with deer. The bottom register with quatrefoil medallions having figural relief scenes. Marked to the underside with a gold stamp, impressed mark and inscribed notation ‘2702.’ The jug is depicted with a five panel scene of Grecian warriors. Marked to the underside with a gold stamp, impressed mark and inscribed notation ‘2868/ 16.’
Zsolnay Pottery was founded by Vilmos Zsolnay in Pecs, Hungary in 1853. Characterized by their Art Nouveau style pottery and figurines fired at high temperatures. Their trademark tower hallmark was not used until 1878, earlier pieces are unmarked. Introduced in 1893, many of the pieces appear with an ‘eosin’ glaze giving them a lustrous iridescent finish.
