19th-Century Fischer J. Ceramic Centerpiece

A 19th-century Fischer J. ceramic centerpiece, Budapest, Hungary. Cornucopia form bowl with and ornate floriform handle. Hand painted polychrome enamel decoration with embossed and gilt floral decoration. Marked to the underside with a black stamp and impressed mark with the numbered notation, 1943.

Fischer J. Budapest was founded by Ignace Fischer in Pest, Hungary, in 1864. (Pest is the eastern half of modern Budapest which was united with the western half, Buda, in 1873). His pieces bear the mark ‘Fischer J.’ with the ‘J’ being the same letter as ‘I’ in Hungarian. The Fischer factory was bought by Zsolnay Pottery in 1895.
