Herman Wessel Original 1922 Gouache on Paper "Bellaire"
Item Details
An original 1922 gouache and watercolor landscape on paper by well-listed American artist Herman Henry Wessel (Cincinnati, Ohio; 1878 – 1969), titled Bellaire. The painting depicts a train of flat boats slowly cruising down a river, a green hillside rising from the banks. A quaint town resides at the summit of the hill, followed by a tall wall of mountains. Title, date and artist signature are signed in paint to the bottom edge. This work is mounted under gray and white matting, behind glass in a beveled wood frame with a gilt finish, equipped to hang. A Closson’s Gallery sticker is attached to the verso.
Wessel studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy in the late 1800s with other well-published artists such as Caroline Lord and Frank Duveneck, and later taught at the Art Academy for over 40 years.
