An antique 18th-century copper plate engraving on laid paper by French engraver Bénard Direxit (active 1806 – 1830) after the original sketch by French naturalist, mathematician, cosmologist, author and artist Georges-Louis Leclerc (1707 – 1788), also known as Comte de Buffon, from Leclerc’s comprehensive publication Histoire Naturelle, Quadrupeds, first published in intervals over an eighteen-year period, from 1749 to 1767, and continued in eight more volumes after his death by Bernard Germain de Lacépède. This plate is number 107, page 56, depicting a variety of species from the Canidae family, each illustration accompanied by printed text identification. This print is mounted under a pale taupe mat, behind museum glass in a black composite frame, equipped to hang.
