Edgar Yaegar Oil Painting on Canvas "Girl Reading Book"

Item Details

An oil painting on canvas titled Girl Reading Book by well-listed American artist Edgar Yaeger (1904-1997). This work features a seated woman leaning against a side table, holding a book face-down with her left hand. Recalling the work of Henri Matisse, the composition is portrayed in a post-impressionist style with bright diluted pigments, simple delineations, sweeping brushstrokes, and flattened forms. The artist’s signature was not visible on the work. The painting is presented in an ornate gold-tone frame with elaborate foliate motifs at the corners. Present to the verso is a descriptive label from Cincinnati Art Galleries, Inc.

Known for his modern abstract style and his WPA murals of the Depression era, Edgar Yaeger was influenced by European modernists such as Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso, and Giorgio de Chirico. His work has been exhibited at many institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the Detroit Institute of Art, the Corcoran Gallery, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, among others.
