Edgar Yaeger Oil Painting on Canvas "Charioteer"

Item Details

An oil painting on canvas titled Charioteer by well-listed Detroit painter Edgar Yaeger (American, 1904-1997), executed in 1940. Inspired by the cubists, the scene features an abstracted figure riding a chariot drawn by two horses in distinct color planes guided by flowing curvilinear lines. Bold, dark colors are contrasted by highlights of pale tones. Signed and dated to the lower left in paint. Frame signed to the verso. A descriptive sheet appears to the foam core backing and a Cincinnati Art Galleries sale tag is present as well. The work is presented without glass and housed in a wood frame. The frame features a hand painted design by Yaeger.

Known for his modern abstract style and his WPA murals of the Depression era, Yaeger was influenced by European modernists such as Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso and Giorgio de Chirico. Yaeger’s work has been exhibited at many institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the Detroit Institute of Art, the Corcoran Gallery, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, among others.
