An oil painting on canvas titled Woven Basket Still Life by well-listed Detroit painter Edgar Yaeger (American, 1904-1997), executed in 1933. Sitting upon a small table top is a red blanket draped over a woven basket with two apples, a wine bottle and a small green bowl sitting next to the basket. Signed and dated to the lower center in red paint. Signed to the verso of the canvas and visible throughout a view window. Old label from Cincinnati Art Galleries present to foam core backing. Presented without glass, housed in a gilt and gesso wood frame with ornate shell and pierced acanthus moulding.
Known for his modern abstract style and his WPA murals of the Depression era, Yaeger was influenced by European modernists such as Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso and Giorgio de Chirico. Yaeger’s work has been exhibited at many institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the Detroit Institute of Art, the Corcoran Gallery, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, among others.
