An oil painting on canvas titled Brutus by well-listed Cincinnati painter Thomas Corwin Lindsay (American, 1839-1907). Reclining across the horizontal is a stoic lion figure at rest. The lions portrayed is Brutus, a once famed inhabiter of the Cincinnati Zoo. His strong paws lay heavy upon the tan dessert ground. The vibrant blue sky stretches on in the background. Signed to the lower left in paint, ‘T.C. Lindsay.’ Presented without glass, housed in a beveled gilt wood frame with an engraved name and title plaque to the lower center.
Thomas Corwin (T.C.) Lindsay, was born in Ohio in 1839. He displayed an interest in painting from an early age and took to the act of expression quite naturally. He studied in Dusseldorf, Germany in the 1860’s and would return to Cincinnati where he opened his own gallery. He is most well known as a painter of landscapes, animal subjects and portraits. His work can be found in many private collections and in the Cincinnati Museum of Art.
Condition
- old canvas has been relined on a newer canvas and stretcher; some craquelure present throughout; some chips and scratches to the corners of the frame; over painting visible to around the edges and heavily to the lower right and center.
