Emily Reid Gouache Painted Salt Print on Paper of a Léonard Limousin Tazza

A salted paper print with applied gouache paint of an enameled limoges tazza by Emily Reid (19th-century), executed in 1882. Hand painted detailed over a photograph depicting an enameled tazza originally created by famed Limoges painter Leonard Limousin (French, c. 1505-c. 1577). The artist recreates the vibrancy and magnificence of the tazza with fine, exacting detail in excellent cobalt and gold colors. Signed and dated to the lower left, ‘Emily Reid 1882’ ‘Sk Mus.’ Mounted to foam core with a white matting and wrapped in acetate.

The annotation ‘Sk Mus’ references the South Kensington Museum in London now referred to as the Victoria and Albert Museum. In the late 19th-century it became popular to hand color photographs of highly decorative objects, especially those found in museums such as South Kensington and the Louvre. J.I. Williamson (British, 19th/20th-century) is known for producing similar paintings of such objects.
