An oil painting on paper titled Black and white still life by listed artist Edgar Hatten (American/Australian; 1929-1990), dated 1982. The painting depicts an abstract composition comprised of intertwined geometric forms filled with black and white pigments. The work is signed by hand to the verso. To the verso, artist’s name, date, and title are inscribed in graphite by an unknown hand. The composition is presented within off-white matting. Accompanied by a catalog from Cincinnati Art Galleries.
Hatten is known for painting abstract still-lifes and landscapes, integrating mood, concept, visual elements, and drama. He was born in Wyoming and lived most of his life in Los Angeles. He was a teacher at Swinbourne College in Australia, and in California at East Los Angeles College and Citrus College.
