Jemez Pueblo Wedding Vase
Item Details
A signed Jemez pueblo style wedding vase pottery vessel. The hand-painted earthenware wedding vase has a round body with double necks connected by a handle. It has a matte white background, and is hand-painted with black and rust colored motifs. The underside is marked with a hand-painted signature by the artist, ‘M.G. + P.S.F. – Jemez’. The wedding vase has been a Pueblo tradition for centuries, with each side of the vase representing the individuals, with their union symbolized by the bridge at the top. The groom’s family provides the vessel, which is filled with holy water. The bridge and groom each drink from the vessel, in a gesture comparable to the exchange of wedding bands in European culture.
