Late 19th Century Oil Portrait on Canvas of Marilla Pratt

Item Details

A circa 1860s oil painting on canvas by an anonymous artist. The half length portrait depicts Marilla Pratt (1807-1892), wife of Buffalo mayor and assemblyman Orlando Allen (1803-1874). She is dressed in dark teal silk, with a delicate lace fischu and layered lace cap, as she sits in a wooden chair before a dark interior. This work is unsigned and presented in a gilt wooden frame that is wired for hanging. The subject attribution is inscribed on the top stretcher on verso.

Condition

- paint missing and surface abrasions along bottom portion of canvas; cracks and chips throughout frame; stain at top left corner of canvas verso; no backing; adhesive holding canvas onto frame.
