An oil painting on canvas of ships in a storm, painted in the style of listed Dutch-American artist Mauritz Frederik Hendrick de Haas (1832-1895). This work depicts a single-masted ship fighting violently against foaming waves, the outline of a second ship visible to the distance. A waterspout has drawn down from the yellow sky toward the painting’s left edge. This piece is marked with a faded facsimile signature reading ‘M.F.H. de Haaes’ to its lower right, and is mounted in a wooden gold tone frame with a wire for hanging to its verso.
