A Zsonlay ceramic figurine of a woman designed by Hungarian artist Sinkó András. Seated upon a bundle of sticks is a somber woman with a plain dress and scarf around her head. She remains barefoot and holds a black stare. Impressed to the base ‘SINKO’ and marked to the underside with a blue tower stamp.
Zsolnay Pottery was founded by Vilmos Zsolnay in Pécs, Hungary in 1853. Characterized by their Art Nouveau style pottery and figurines fired at high temperatures. Their trademark tower hallmark was not used until 1878, earlier pieces are unmarked. Introduced in 1893, many of the pieces appear with an ‘eosin’ glaze giving them a lustrous iridescent finish.
