A charcoal and conte crayon drawing on paper of a seated nude female figure by listed Russian-American artist Abraham Solomon Baylinson (1882-1950), created in 1945. This nearly full-body portrait features a three-quarter view of a woman seated in an interior space. The work is signed and dated in charcoal to the lower right. It is presented under glass with off-white canvas matting, and housed in a gold-tone wood frame. A label from The Wallnuts is present to the verso.

Born in Russia, Abraham Baylinson emigrated to the United States in the early 20th century and settled in New York City. He attended the Art Students League of New York, the National Academy of Design, and the New York School of Art where he studied under Robert Henri. Baylinson is known for his Modernist figural and still life paintings. His work has been exhibited at renowned art institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the Corcoran Gallery, among others.

Condition

- drawing is misaligned and needs adjusting in frame; backing paper punctured at center; label to verso is peeling off; some wear to frame includes scratches, stains, and some gilt loss scattered throughout.
