Wooden Elevator Car with Stool by Waygood-Otis
Item Details
An early 20th century Waygood-Otis wooden elevator car, with matching stool. This piece features paneled wooden construction with a mahogany finish and four floral etched glass windows. Inside is a hanging light with frosted globe and pull string. It has two interior plaques, one reading ‘Waygood-Otis Ltd., Fether Lane, London’, and the other ‘4 Persons’, presumably the load limit of the device. Also included is the matching stool, with a black tufted seat with nailhead trim over a box construction with brass joinings.
R. Waygood & Co. began manufacturing hand-cranked elevators in 1833, and in 1868 became the first English firm to expand to electric elevators. In 1914, Waygood established a warehouse on Feather Lane in London, assuming the Otis Elevator Company’s London business as Waygood-Otis. Ultimately, their influence spread, and today classic Waygood-Otis machines still exist in many spots in England and across the globe.
