Collection of 18th and 19th Century Intaglio Prints

A collection of nine antique intaglio prints on paper, including engravings and etchings. The set includes two 18th-century prints including George Villiers Duke of Buckingham at Somerset House engraved by C. Johnson after George Noble, as well as John Duke of Marlborough by Jacob Houbraken after Godfrey Kneller. Also included are six 19th-century prints including Braddock’s Retreat after Alonzo Chappel, The Woodman by E. Roffe, Govr. Stuyvesant Destroying the Summons to Surrender N.Y. after William Henry Powell, The American Soldier by Conrad and Serz, Ball Play of the Dakota (Sioux) Indians by Isaac Burt after Seth Eastman, and Napoleon on Board the Bellerophon by J.C. Armytage after Sir William Quiller Orchardson. The set also includes one undated intaglio print depicting three mermaids.
Condition
- ranges from Good to Poor; toning and foxing to all prints; 17th-century prints, mermaid print and Johnson & Miles prints are more heavily worn, creased and discolored with multiple tears and wear to edges; The Woodman, American Soldier and Napoleon prints are in Good to Fair condition with light toning and minor edge wear; Eastman/Burt print is discolored with corner creasing present; items are unframed.
