Peter Williams Oil Painting on Canvas "Del Mar Workout"
Item Details
An oil painting on canvas sketch titled Del Mar Workout by Peter Williams (New Zealand, Contemporary). WIlliams is well known for his plein air paintings of Throroughbreds at various race tracks including Keeneland and Churchill Downs. Del Mar Racetrack, near San Diego, opened in 1937 and is currently the second largest horse racing venue in the west. It was developed by a partnership that included Bing Crosby, Pat O’Brien, Gary Cooper, Joe E. Brown, and Oliver Hardy. Charles Howard, the owner of Seabiscuit, was also involved in its creation. The iconic Spanish mission style architecture of the clubhouse and grandstand is visible in the background as two horses gallop in a morning workout. A trainer (possibly Hall of Fame inductee D. Wayne Lukas in his white cowboy hat) sits on a lead pony. The work is signed in the lower left corner and has been framed in a simple grown wooden frame with a picture wire. Also attached to the reverse is a label from Cross Gate Gallery, Lexington, Kentucky, citing the artist’s name and the title.
