Hand-Knotted Persian Tribal Area Rug

Item Details

A Persian tribal area rug. This unusual wool rug, possibly Bakshaish, is hand-knotted in an abrashed palette of ivory, camel, cerulean, midnight blue, taupe, pink, and shades of gray. Rendered in freehand, the design begins with a hexagonal medallion with large pendants over an ivory field. Enclosed within the medallion as well as the spandrels are a constellation of small hexagons in different colors over taupe. A pair of lateral borders (which almost certainly once enclosed the field on all sides) feature abstract meandering vines over camel, flanked on either side by mirrored laleh abbasi minor borders. Selvedges are overcast. The rug finishes at each end with unbound, undyed warp fringe made of goat hair and wool. It is unlabeled.
