A carved wood santos en nicho with narrative figurines by Peruvian artist Nicario Jiminez. This intricate, folk art style work opens up to reveal traditional Catholic figures and mythical beings from Peruvian legends. A saint-like figure in the sky is flanked by an angel and a devil, below a soaring bird and a sun and moon. At the saint’s feet are masked figures reveling, holding instruments and bottles up to the sky as they dance and shout. The santos en nicho is housed in a cabinet-like box, with painted floral decorations inside and out. The work is signed to the verso, with a sawtooth hanger affixed.
