An oil painting on canvas titled Farmyard by French Barbizon artist Jules Dupré (1811-1889). This Barbizon landscape features a farm scene populated with many farm animals among some men working in the field; a quaint cottage is visible in the middle-ground; trees and foliage are scattered throughout. The painting is signed to the lower left. It is presented in an ornate gilt and gesso frame with elaborate foliate molding. A metal nameplate is affixed to the central lower area of the frame. The verso is marked with the stamp of professional restorer James Swopes.
Born in France, Jules Dupré was a celebrated member of the Barbizon School of landscape painters. He exhibited his work at the Paris Salons, and in 1848, was appointed as an Officer of the French Légion d’honneur. His work has been collected and exhibited by renowned art institutions including the Louvre Museum, the National Gallery of Art, and the Rijksmuseum, among many others.
Condition
- canvas professionally repaired with in-painting to several areas of clouds; patch repair with in-painting to upper center of tree; canvas has been relined and strip-lined; craquelure throughout; wear and some tarnish to frame with a few chips.
