An oil painting on canvas by French Realist artist Henri-Joseph Harpignies (1819-1916). This landscape painting uses the soft tones and loose brushwork of the Barbizon school to depict a forest at dawn. Through a break in the trees, the sun can be seen breaking over the horizon and casting pale pink light into the sky. It is signed and dated ‘1900’ to the lower left corner, and a placard on the lower side of the frame lists the artist’s name and lifespan. The piece is presented in an ornate, gold tone gesso and wood frame with a fabric liner that is wired for hanging.
Condition
- to fair; faint craquelure to paint at left center; repaired tear to canvas at lower right with small line of in-painting; several chips to frame and cracking at corners; significant wear and tarnish to gold tone finish of frame.
