Hand-Knotted Chinese "War Horse" Area Rug
Item Details
A hand-knotted and carved Chinese war horse area rug. This wool rug is rendered in a palette of cream, sapphire, azure, dusty blue, and brown-burgundy. It begins with a round medallion containing a depiction of a saddled, riderless horse running at a gallop. Surrounded by a framework of scrolling vines and foliage, the medallion rests on a cream colored field, which features at each corner a pair of saddled horses, one browsing with its head down, the other trotting. Framing the field are four borders, including a primary border grounded in dusty blue, featuring a series of cartouches, each containing a galloping horse. Selvedges are overcast. The rug finishes at top and bottom with short kilim skirts and long, knotted ivory wool warp fringe. It is unlabeled.
