Solveig Cox Hand Thrown and Hand-Painted Bowl with Cat Decor

A large hand-painted bowl by the iconic Solveig Cox, ‘The Cat Lady,’ well known for her whimsical designs of cats on her hand thrown and handbuilt ceramic ware. The bowl is a bright teal green with a spiral pattern, having two lazy cats sprawled across the surface in black and black and white tabby stripe. The underside of the bowl is glazed a bright fuchsia with a large white cat peeking out from the underside. The artist’s signature is written on the base. Also included is a small mixing bowl with a blue foliate pattern and a pink cat hand-painted to the center, unmarked. Included is a pair of cast resin black and white cat bookends, and a small ceramic black and white teapot with a black cat to the front and a black lid, unmarked.

Solveig Cox (American, 1931 – 2017) learned to appreciate arts from an early age through her parents, a radio producer and a haute couture fashion designer. She learned pottery techniques and practices in Munich, Germany, while her husband, who worked for the CIA, was stationed as an undercover operative during the 1950s. Upon retiring from the military The Cox’s returned to Virginia where she pursued a highly successful career in ceramics, selling her popular cat-themed ware, giftware, furniture and pottery coast to coast.
