Item Details

A framed original oil on board landscape by Louisville, Kentucky artist Patty Prather Thum (October 1, 1853 – September 28, 1926). The back has two labels with antique handwriting, each indicate a different title of The New Field and Full Meadow. Depicted is a fall landscape painting of a field at harvest. The painting is signed by the artist on the lower right corner. It is framed in mahogany and wired for hanging.

Thum was first tutored in drawing by her mother at home. She later studied art at Vassar College under the direction of Henry Van Ingen, then at the New York Art Students League with William Merritt Chase, and also with Henry Mowbray and Lemuel Wiles. In 1870 she returned to Louisville, where she maintained a studio for 35 years. Her paintings reflect her love of nature, particularly flowers, for which she was known.
