Rare Southwestern Portrait of a Native American by Simon Baus
Item Details
An oil on canvas board half-length portrait of a Native American woman by well listed Indiana impressionist Simon Baus (American, 1882-1969). The work is signed to the lower left, and the canvas is laid over masonite.
Simon Baus was best known for his Indiana landscapes and portrait subjects. He exhibited frequently in Indianapolis. Little is known regarding his subject of the American West, and few examples have surfaced. However, Baus did make several trips to the Southwest, and he held several special exhibits of this work back in Indianapolis. Attached to the verso are also two articles related to Baus’ Native American portraits. THis example is most akin to the Taos School of painting, which was a thriving artist’s community during the early 20th century.
