Victorian Woolwork on Silk Depicting the 93rd Regiment
Item Details
A mid 19th-century, ca 1854, Victorian woolwork on silk. Depicted are two officers with a spaniel beneath a tree with Stirling Castle in the background. Created during the time of the Crimean War when the 93rd embarked for Crimea in February of 1854. The soldiers are depicted with a number ‘93’ across their belt plate and dressed to represent the 93rd Regiment of Foot of the British Army. The regiment was a line infantry known as the ‘Sutherland Highlanders.’ Their facial features and clouds in the background are painted while the rest is embroidered in excellent color. Presented under glass, housed in a birdseye maple wood frame with gilt sight edge.
Condition
- some minor scratches to the frame; small area of embroidery loss in the left soldiers chest.
