A Galileo thermometer. The paraffin oil filled glass thermometer is based on a principal that Galileo discovered. He found that liquids will contract at higher temperatures and that liquid filled spheres of slightly different weights would rise, and as the liquids cooled, the spheres would drop. The correct temperature can be told by reading the lowest floating sphere in the upper part of the chamber.
