1868 "Laws of the Dakota Territory"

Item Details

An antique copy of the Public and Private Laws, Memorials and Resolutions of the Territory of Dakota, published 1867-68 by Geo. W. Kingsbury of Yankton, Dakota Territory. It is a record of the laws passed by the territorial legislature defining the powers and processes of the territorial government, an important aspect of the settlement of the West. Also of particular historical interest in the context of the immediate aftermath of the American Civil War, is a law passed December 1867 striking the word ‘white’ from all voting laws of the territory, thereby extending suffrage to other races (page 255). Other issues discussed include mining rights, incorporation of towns, road and railroad projects, and Indian reservations and relocation. The cover of the volume is mostly missing except for a detached front board, but the sewn bindings still hold most of the pages together.

Condition

- to poor; cover mostly missing, with only a detached front board remaining. The front board is in calf leather with a previous owner’s initials in pen. Bindings are still intact and hold most of the pages together although there are a few detached pages at the front.
