1685 "Works of Catullus" in Latin, from the "Delphin Classics"

Item Details

A 1685 antique hardcover volume of the C. Valerii Catulli Opera or the Works of Catullus, with analysis and notes by Philippus Silvius, and published by Frederic Leonard Regis of Paris. Published ‘by order of the most Christian king, for the use of the most serene Dauphin’, i.e. by the order of Louis XIV, the ‘Sun King’, nominally for the education of his son the Grand Dauphin Louis. This indicates that it was part of a series of twenty-five Latin classics commissioned by the King in 1670, today known as the ‘Delphin classics’. It has Latin language text of the works of famous Roman poet Gaius Valerius Catullus (c. 84 – 54 BC), with a wood engraved frontispiece illustration along with headers and accents. Printed on laid paper, and bound in a leather hardcover with a paneled spine and sewn bindings.
