Antique English William and Mary Slant Front Desk, Circa 1730

Item Details

An antique English William and Mary slant front desk, circa 1730. The walnut-veneered case has oak and pine secondaries. It features a rectangular top above a hinged, slant front opening to an amphitheater interior. The interior has a row of six valenced, pigeonholes above a three-compartment shelf, all of which are located behind a storage well with a sliding lid. The storage well is flanked on each side by three stepped drawers. The writing surface extends over a stack of three graduated and dovetailed long drawers. The crossbanded, burled, and inlaid fronts are fitted with brass handles and foliate-engraved escutcheons. The desk rises on a molded base ending in bun feet. It is accompanied by a retail label from ‘The A.B. Closson, Jr. Co. / Art Importers Interior Decorators / 421 Race Street Cincinnati / Antiques’.

Provenance: Purchased by the consignor from the Mount Auburn, Ohio estate of Dr. Henry Kennon Dunham, who was instrumental in eradicating tuberculosis in the early 20th century. Please see EBTH sale 14CIN022-002. It was previously sold by The A.B. Closson, Jr. Co. of Cincinnati, Ohio.

- scattered wear and imperfections as would be expected with age and use, including stains, cracks, light joint separations, and veneer chips/losses; some former pest damage (worming); sun fading to wood; side panels with age splits; proper back left foot with a repaired break; all feet with small losses; brasses probably not original; interior lock mechanisms on drawers probably later; feet possibly not original/married; other scattered repairs and restorations, including but not limited to, missing/replaced glue blocks, replaced drawer runners, and veneer repairs.
