1852 "Roughing It in the Bush; or Life in Canada" 1st Ed.

Item Details

An 1852 antique hardcover copy of Roughing It in the Bush; or, Life in Canada by Susanna Moodie. This is the first American edition, published 1852 by George P. Putnam of New York. There was an earlier London edition, published in the same year. Moodie was a British woman who settled with her family in the backwoods of Ontario. In Roughing It she describes in detail the hardships of frontier life, in contrast to the idealized picture painted by the pro-settlement advertising campaigns of the British Empire at the time. This copy is in two volumes, bound in non-original red cloth library hardcovers.
