Hmong "Paj ntaub" Panel

A Hmong paj ntaub or ‘flower cloth’ panel. These pieces are made by the Hmong people and are used to decorate clothing and as art. This piece is hand-made using appliqué and reverse appliqué techniques. It has a lower layer of black, upon which a square of red is stitched. radiating from the center, areas have been cut from the red to reveal black and create an eight-pointed star design with concentric outlines extending, with the points against the sides of the square breaking off and having more layers than the corners. The traditional ‘flower’ design of two swirls branching off of each other fills each corner. Applied atop the red layer are small triangles of green and white in pinwheel organizations around the border and in the center of the star. This piece is presented as a loose piece.

- edges are unfinished and fraying; back lining is stained.
