A Maori patu tawaka, or wooden club. The patu – literally meaning ‘to beat’ or ‘to subdue’ – is a traditional weapon of the Maori people of New Zealand; this one has a relatively long, narrow handle and a heavy wooden head. A geometric pattern has been painted on the head in red, white, and black.
