Hand-Knotted Heriz Serapi Area Rug
Item Details
A hand-knotted Heriz Serapi area rug. This wool rug appears to have changed dye lots in every color and likely changed weavers nearly half way through. Its combined palette is red, cream, ivory, black, sapphire, and saffron. The lower half of the rug displays softer tones, whereas the upper half features a higher-contrast palette. Taken together the two halves feature a classic Heriz design, beginning with a very large octagram star medallion over a red field, with large pendants and deep spandrels, the field populated with rectilinear florets, palmettes, vines, and leaves. The field is framed by compound borders, including a stylized herati primary border. Selvedges are overcast, the rug finishing at each end with ivory wool warp fringe. It is unlabeled.
