Hand-Knotted Persian Bakhtiari Area Rug
Item Details
A large hand-knotted Persian Bakhtiari tribal area rug. This rectilinear wool rug is crisply rendered in a palette of strawberry, midnight blue, and cream, with prominent green highlights. It begins with a midnight blue central pendant medallion. The medallion rests on a strawberry-colored field, which is densely populated with botanical motifs including willow trees, which flower on one side and weep on the other; a wide variety of palmettes; lancet leaves; and intricate vinework. Framing the field are compound floral borders including a highly stylized herati main border over midnight blue. Selvedges are overcast. One end finishes with ivory wool warp fringe while the other has shorn fringe. The rug is unlabeled.
